What Kind of Reader Are You?

Mood Reading.JPG

I have been reading pretty much my whole life and only recently discovered something about myself. I am a mood reader. I didn’t even know what that was until about a year ago when I started reading more book blogs and following bookstagram accounts. With the exception of school, I have always read what I wanted to read when I wanted to. But I didn’t realize there was a name for that until last year. I am definitely a mood reader and read to escape. I prefer to escape into fiction when my real life gets stressful or the news gets too depressing (which seems to be more often than not).

When I looked back over the last few years of my reading life, I found a couple of trends. Generally after reading a heavy book (literary fiction or nonfiction), I usually follow with a lighter book. A few years ago, my lighter books were typically women’s fiction (also known as chick lit). Then last year, I read a lot of YA fiction. Then this year I discovered romantic comedy and romance novels. And while I still enjoy literary fiction and good nonfiction, I find myself needing to be in the mood to read those books. So I've read more rom-coms this year in order to de-stress and avoid more intense topics.

There are a few downsides to being a mood reader though. When I have several books checked out from the library, I sometimes send them back unread because I’m just not in the mood to pick up a mystery or whatever I put on hold months ago. Sometimes I’ll start a book and then it will sit on my nightstand for a week or two before I pick it back up again (hello, A Gentleman in Moscow). Sometimes I will read 4 to 5 lighter books in a row before getting back in the mood to read a heavier book. But overall, I enjoy my reading life the most when I follow my mood and read what I want.

What kind of reader are you? Are you a mood reader as well?
