Happy First Birthday to A Novel Look
It’s hard to believe that it has been one year since I started A Novel Look. It has been a learning experience, but has definitely made my reading life so much better. I’ve enjoyed interacting with new people over books and our love for reading. But mostly, I am grateful for my little corner of the internet where I can share my thoughts on books I have loved (and hated) and my reading goals.
My Favorite Posts from the Past Year:
My Rom-Com Recaps are always fun to write. I just started reading romance this year, and it’s been nice to incorporate love stories in with the more serious reading I try to do. I think my favorite Rom-Com Recap is the one where I gush about the Winston Brothers. Penny Reid remains one of my favorite writers, and those Winstons are just so darn amazing. The Rom-Com Recaps are also some of the most popular posts, which I like because don't we all need some feel-good stories right now?!
My Unread Shelf Updates are some of the most interesting and hardest posts to write because I am notorious at not reading books I already own but have yet to read. I am beholden to the library, and my Kindle calls to me more often than it should. Before I write these posts, I will stand in front of my bookshelves for a while and see what looks good. I used to not have that many books I had not already read, but library book sales have been both a blessing and a curse. That won't stop from me going to them anyways. But the good news is I am slowly making my way through some of the books I own. Bel Canto was one I was determined to read, and I am so glad I finally picked it up. It is one of my favorites from this year. Hopefully, I can knock out a few more books this fall from my Unread Shelf.
One of the most enjoyable and thought-provoking posts to write was my post on the Top 10 Books I Wanted Adapted for Film. There have been a rush of movie or television adaptations of good books recently, and I know at least An American Marriage has already been optioned by a production company. But with the success of the movies Crazy Rich Asians and To All the Boys I've Loved Before, I am hoping we'll get some more rom-com adaptations. I still think Mindy Kaling is the perfect person to adapt When Dimple Met Rishi.
My very first post was my Summer Reading Recap from last summer. And while my writing has improved, I think I will always have a soft spot for those first few posts. I spent several weeks writing those posts before I published anything, just to make sure I had enough content. But the Summer Recap also was full of a lot of great books, so that helped make it a fun post. I had several five star favorites from then; unsurprisingly, most were YA rom-coms.
Thank you for making A Novel Look a fun place for me, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing. Here’s to another great year of reading!
